`laugh at'은 `~를 보고 웃다'의 뜻이 아닌 `비웃다'라는 뜻이므로 사용할 때 주의해야 합니다. 비슷한 표현으로는 `jeer at', `ridicule' 등이 있습니다.
그러면 `~에게 미소를 보내다'라는 표현은 어떻게 쓸까요. 바로 `smile at(on)'을 쓰면 됩니다.
`Luck smiled on us then.'은 `그 때 행운의 여신이 우리에게 미소를 지었다'라는 뜻이 됩니다.
